Distance Education

Our Mission...​

The mission of RCCD Distance Education is to support the​ social and economic mobility of its students by ensuring access, success, and equity​ for everyone through the efficient, effective, accountable, and transparent use of distance education resources for faculty. ​​This is achieved by providing: 

      • Access to educational technology that supports fully online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses that are accessible to all students
      • Access to a variety of student services that support guided pathways and enrich the learning experience
      • Training and certification opportunities for staff and faculty teaching and providing student services online

Online Course Designations

RCCD uses the following modalities:

  • Online (ONLN) -- ​No scheduled meeting days: Online classes are distance education classes with no scheduled meeting days. Students will log in to Canvas and complete work regularly throughout the week. Canvas and other technologies will be required to complete coursework.  
    • Re​gular Meeting (REG MEET) -- Specific days/times: Distance education classes with regular weekly meeting(s) during scheduled days and times. Students will attend class online during the published course times. Additionally, students will log in to Canvas and complete work regularly throughout the week. Canvas and other technologies will be required to complete coursework.  
    • Occasional Meeting (OCC MEET) -- Specific days/times: Distance education classes with occasional meetings during scheduled days and times. Students will occasionally attend class online during the published course times. Additionally, students will log in to Canvas and complete work regularly throughout the week. Canvas and other technologies will be required to complete coursework.  
  • Hybrid (HYB) -- Hybrid classes are distance education courses combined with on-campus face-to-face classes that will meet on required scheduled meetings days and times unless the college is ordered to discontinue face-to-face classes. If face-to-face courses are discontinued, and the course cannot be completed through distance education, it will be canceled. Canvas and other technologies will be required to complete coursework. 
  • Face to Face (F2F) -- Face-to-face classes are in-person and on-campus classes with weekly scheduled meeting days and times. Students will complete the semester on campus unless the college is ordered to discontinue face-to-face classes. If face-to-face courses are discontinued, and the course cannot be completed through distance education, it will be canceled.

      • Canvas System Status - provides up-to-date information on Canvas system availability and details on Canvas operational/access issues if any.
      • Canvas Release Notes - provides information on improvements and updates to the Canvas software for the current release. 
      • Canvas Upcoming Changes​ - provides information on upcoming improvements and updates to the Canvas software.
