The Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties Featured in Prestigious National Traveling Exhibition Pictures of Belonging

The Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties is proud to announce that twelve works from its collection are included in Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo, a landmark three-year traveling exhibition organized by the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Los Angeles and curated by Professor ShiPu Wang of UC Merced.
The exhibition celebrates the pioneering artistry of three Japanese American women—Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Riverside native Miné Okubo—whose powerful works illuminate stories of resilience, identity, and belonging.
Currently on view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious art museums, Pictures of Belonging has already been showcased at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, underscoring its national significance.
“We are honored to see works from the Riverside Community College District’s Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties represented in such an important exhibition,” said Tracy Fisher, PhD, Director of the Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties. “The inclusion of artwork from the Miné Okubo Collection in Pictures of Belonging not only celebrates the extraordinary legacy of Miné Okubo and her contemporaries but also highlights the Center’s ongoing role in illuminating stories that shape our understanding of social justice, citizenship, and belonging.”
As the exhibition continues to travel across the country, it invites audiences to consider the intersections of art, history, and civil rights, while honoring the cultural contributions of Japanese American artists.
