RCCD Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy with Events Across Three Colleges

The Riverside Community College District (RCCD) will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with special events at Moreno Valley College (MVC), Norco College, and Riverside City College (RCC) throughout January 2025.
Moreno Valley College will host the 13th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award Ceremony on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 7:30 to 9:30 AM at the Moreno Valley Conference & Recreation Center. This year’s ceremony will honor James Banks, a long-serving MVC faculty member and recipient of the 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award. Banks is recognized for founding MVC’s Food Bank and Clothing Closet and his tireless advocacy for education and social justice. The event will also celebrate outstanding high school and college students who embody Dr. King’s commitment to equality and opportunity.
Norco College will host its Second Annual Day of Service on January 17, 2025. The event, supported by ASNC and various student clubs, will focus on community action and leadership in alignment with Dr. King’s principles. Through initiatives such as the Men of Color Scholars Program, Norco College continues to foster equity and create opportunities for underserved populations.
Riverside City College will hold its Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Brunch on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM at the Business, Law, and Computer Information Systems Building, Rooms 114 A & B. The theme of this year’s brunch, “Martin Luther King and the Call to Conscience,” will feature keynote speaker Nana Dr. Chike Akua, an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and advocate for equity and education. Dr. Akua’s journey of resilience and commitment to transformation aligns with the core values Dr. King championed.
“These events are a testament to our ongoing commitment to Dr. King’s vision,” said Dr. Isaac. “Through education, service, and community engagement, we empower our students to be leaders who drive meaningful change.”
