Black Student Success Week

Dear Riverside Community College District,

I am pleased to announce the upcoming Black Student Success Week, which will take place from April 24 through April 28. This year's theme is "Vision to Action: Building Systems and Structures for Black Student Success." It will focus on successful approaches to ensuring Black and African American students succeed at RCCD and throughout all California community colleges. This is a top priority for our district.

It is my hope that this week will serve as a catalyst for change and inspire us all to reaffirm our commitment to providing students with greater support, resources, and the opportunities they need to succeed, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. Black Student Success Week is a celebration of this commitment and a call to action for all members of our community.

At RCCD, we proudly promote equity and inclusion in education. We recognize that Black students have historically been marginalized and face systemic barriers that hinder their academic progress. We cannot rely on the success of a select few; we must strive for collective success where everyone has the opportunity to excel. Therefore, we must continue prioritizing initiatives that address these challenges and ensure every student thrives.

The events and activities planned for Black Student Success Week will allow us to learn from one another and share best practices. We will hear from guest speakers and participate in workshops and panel discussions on topics such as mentoring, academic support, and student engagement. These sessions will provide valuable insights and strategies for promoting the success of our Black students and will also create opportunities for meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

As we look to the future, we must continue to build systems and structures that facilitate the measurable growth of all our students. By working together, we can create an environment that fosters academic achievement and prepares our students for success in their personal and professional lives.

We change nothing until we change the collective mindset on how we see Black and African American student success. Below are resources for each college's Black Student Success Week activities, including activities held by the Community College League of California.

With Appreciation,

Wolde-Ab Isaac, Ph.D.
