Young @ Heart Senior Citizen Education (SCE) Course Descriptions:
SCE-809, Computer Basics for Older Adults: This course is designed to teach students age 55 years and older the basics of home computer use, including terminology, components, basic windows functions, accessory programs, simple word processing and spreadsheet programs as well as skills in accessing and using the internet and email. 16 hours lab.
SCE-810, Photography: In this course, students age 55 years and older will use their own 35mm and digital cameras as they learn the theory and application of basic photographic skills needed to consistently take high quality photographs under a variety of shooting conditions through both lecture and field work. Students will be responsible for processing their own photographs. Socialization and working as a group will be an important part of this course. Students will be taught in a progressive systematic manner. Field photo shoots in a wide variety of locations and settings are included as part of the class. Students will use a class email network to share photography articles, class schedules and announcements of field shoot locations. 28 hours lab.
SCE-811, Drawing and Painting: This course designed for students age 55 years and older will include a variety of drawing, illustration, painting, mixed media and basic design components that will allow individual classes to have one or more emphasis and will focus on the development and/or enhancement of mental acuity, fine motor skills, creativity and art appreciation in a welcoming, social environment. Classes may include creative interpretation of subjects from life, landscape and imagination, basic exploration of design elements and principles, composition, observation skills, perspective on art appreciation and history and methods of conserving and displaying completed works. Socialization and interaction will be an important part of this class. Students will be taught in a progressive systematic manner. Students will provide their own materials and supplies.

SCE-813, Healthy Aging for Older Adults: Students age 55 years and older will be provided with practical information regarding healthy aging, including diet, nutrition, disease prevention, fall prevention & balance and application of principles focused on maintaining good health as they age. Topics for this class can involve the study and practice of Yoga, Tai Chi Chuan, Pilates, Water Aerobics, Balanced Body Fitness, Zumba Gold, and Arthritis Foundation exercises. 13 hours lecture and 11 hours lab.
SCE-830, Mature Driver Improvement: This course is designed to update the driving skills of students 55 years and older. Curriculum is provided by the State of California DMV to help older drivers become more defensive, more alert to their surroundings as they drive and to familiarize them with new traffic laws. DMV requires that the course be 8 hours long and be open to a maximum of 30 students. Students will pay a $1.00 fee to the instructor in class for the DMV Certificate of Completion. 8 hours lecture.
SCE-840, Craft Therapy & Design: This course will provide an opportunity for students age 55 years and older to create and construct various types of crafts in a socially interactive environment. The course will feature crafts that allow students to use their creative talents to retain and continue to develop fine motor skills and improve memory skills. Class topics include jewelry-making, mosaics, and mixed media. Students will supply their own craft materials. 24 hours lab.
